About S.A.S.S.
Our client is the Sexual Assault Support Services located on the corner of 19th and Jefferson in Eugene, OR. S.A.S.S. is a non-profit organization that is committed to helping and supporting survivors of sexual violence and their partners, families, and friends. They provide community education and outreach throughout the Lane County area.
Their current facility is housed in a former residence and provides a welcoming environment for people seeking their services, although most of their services are accessed mostly over the telephone.
SASS approached designBridge with a simple task of upgrading their current deck in their side yard, which is now in poor condition. Our team's design will incorporate a solution that addresses various issues regarding the space. These are our design objectives:
1. The entire yard should be inclusive and available for anyone to use. A ramped, accessible surface will allow people to safely travel from the house to the yard.
2. Considering SASS relies mostly on volunteer assistance, all plants and materials require as little maintenance as possible.
3. A transition between the building and the outdoors should extend out into the landscape and provide a meaningful connection to the ground.
4. The space should not force a false sense of security on users, but rather allow people to occupy the space comfortably and safely.
5. The entire yard space should be flexible enough to allow for variant scales of groups to use. A single person should be able to relax and find refuge in the certain spaces while the main gathering space would be able to open up and offer space for large gatherings for such gatherings such as fundraising events.
